Summary/Abstract: The development of reading comprehension is an important objective in the teaching of foreign languages for professional purposes. In order to acquire reading fluency, learners need to be familiar with the specific vocabulary of the discipline, the morphology and syntax of scientific texts, and the discursive genres of the professional domain. They also need to develop reading strategies that allow them to access the meaning of the texts and to be aware of when and how to use these strategies. Taking into account these needs, our paper discusses the possibility of developing reading comprehension in the teaching of Romanian as a foreign language. In particular, we focus on the teaching of the specialized language of medical sciences to foreign students in Romania. The didactic proposals presented in the paper were developed and used by the authors during their courses with foreign students at the "Ovidius" University of Constanta. One proposal is based on the comprehension of a text at the CEFR level B1, which allowed the introduction of reading strategies such as summarization. The second didactic proposal is based on a text at the B1+ level and it includes strategies such as the use of graphic organizers, reading for details, inferencing and debating. The results showed that due to the high number of technical terms, students may have difficulties in guessing unknown meanings from the context when reading scientific texts. The various tasks suggested encouraged them to read the text intensively and notice details missed during their initial reading.
