Summary/Abstract: The euphoria surrounding the presidential election results has passed, and after six weeks of intense discussions, a new government has been installed at Palatul Victoria. The new governing program includes a substantial list of measures in the area of taxes and duties. Of course, it's worth remembering that these measures come in the context of Romania's 2024 budget deficit reaching 9.6% (while the EU average was 3.2%), and a current account deficit of 8.5%. In this context, there has been serious debate about the need to reduce public spending, increase the capacity to absorb EU funds, improve tax collection, and reduce the fiscal gap (the difference between the theoretical tax level and actual revenue collected). It has also been acknowledged that avoiding tax hikes will be nearly impossible if Romania is to meet the budget deficit targets agreed upon with the European Commission.
