Summary/Abstract: The two-thousand-year existence of the Christian Church arouses the interest of researchers, who try to identify the “secret” of its longevity. While the theological explanation emphasizes the fact that the Church is a divine-human institution, supported by the work of the Holy Spirit, researchers in the field of social sciences analyse with their specific tools the way in which the Church is organized and functions. Using an approach specific to political science – which studies how individuals with different and often divergent preferences come to cooperate –, in the present paper I will analyse the influence that the political aspect had in the definition and subsequent implementation of the rules of faith, with a special focus on the first ecumenical council of Nicaea.
