Summary/Abstract: The Poles from Bukovina represent an important historical community from the Bucovina region in northern part of Romania, their presence in these lands being the result of migrations from the 19th century that contributed to the ethnic and cultural diversity of the region. Chronologically, between 1772 - 1918, there were migratory waves that resulted in the founding of Polish settlements in Bucovina: Cacica, Solonețu Nou, Poiana Micului, Pleșa, Ruda – Vicșani, Bulai – Moara, in the southern part of Bukowina. The Poles also settled in the urban centers, where they practiced: trade, leased estates or held administrative positions, being favored by their higher education. In the 20-th century, the evolution of population of the Polish community after the Second World War was in a permanent regression, marked by a sharp decrease in the number of ethnic Poles that occurs between 1941 and 1956, due to the annexation by the Soviet Union of the northern part of Bucovina, where they lived almost 2/3 of Bukovina Poles and repatriates made by The Polish state after the Second World War II. In the period 1966 - 1992, in the southern part of Bucovina, the number of ethnic Poles remained constant, at the level of 2700 - 2800 people, and from 1992 to 2021, over the course of three decades, a numerical decrease followed, with over 40% of the population of Polish ethnicity. Today their presence is significant in compact rural settlements, which hold 90% of the number of ethnic Poles from south of Bucovina.
