Summary/Abstract: By studying peculiarities of socialisation in middle childhood we have investigated how secrets are understood and disclosed to friends by children. A sample of 1 60 children aged 6, 8, 10 and 12 was taken for the research. In a structured interview, it was tested how often different kinds of secrets are told to friends. Guilt-related secrets are revealed more seldom by children older than 10—12 years. Difference of relling dangerous secrets is lower. Innocent secrets are told the most seldom by all children. Trust in a friend is valued more by older children. Sharing one's own secret with a friend becomes a special symbol of their friendship. Lithuanian children keep their secrets from friends more often than German children.
