Summary/Abstract: The following article aims to present the folklore motif of maiden sacrifice, where a mason sacrifices his beloved woman to strengthen a building, and its interpretation in literature. The focus is on two pieces of Bulgarian literature – the drama “Masons” by Petko Todorov and the short story “The Stone Bridge over Rositsa” by Angel Karaliychev. The comparison is based on several main points of the motif: the construction, the victim, the method of embedding the soul of the sacrificed woman into the building, and the sin of the mason who made the choice to do so. The purpose of this text is to observe both authors’ intertextual approaches towards the same motif.
