Summary/Abstract: The article presents a comparative analysis of selected scenes from two versions of 'Rękopis znaleziony w Saragossie' ('The Manuscript Found in Saragossa') by Jan Potocki (1804 and 1810) in the context of the author’s self-censorship practices in the final version of the novel. These practices took the form of removing or modifying sections critical of religion of the revealed content and tempering a specific group of erotic motifs. A comparison of the erotic scenes in 'Days 5–8' enables the identification of the scope and nature of the alterations introduced, as well as raising questions about their consequences for the epistemological reflection embedded in the work and its artistic construction. The analysis concludes that, with regard to erotica, the attempt to limit its 'indecency' did not negate the unique subversiveness of 'Rękopis'.
