A Critical Portrait of Vilnius in Józef Julian Sękowski’s Posłuchanie u Lucypera

Summary/Abstract: The article analyzes the portrait of Vilnius in Posłuchanie u Lucypera, a satirical story by Józef Sękowski, an orientalist and polyglot born in the Vilnius region, who, after 1832, broke off relations with Polishness in favor of Russian identity. The writer, eager to use grotesque, scathing irony and caricature, creates a mocking image of the city of his youth. The components of the critical portrait of Vilnius, whose myth in Polish literature was just beginning to take shape, include numerous moral scandals, ignorance, civilizational and intellectual backwardness, and the irrationality of decision-making.
