Manipulation of compromising information as a method of falsification during the investigation in the Great Terror (on the example of A. Hepler’s archival-criminal case)

Summary/Abstract: The goal is to investigate the manipulation of compromising information, which was used to confirm the counter-revolutionary Trotskyist activities based on the materials of archival-criminal and personal cases of the former deputy head of the UNKVD in Chernihiv region, Abraham Ilyich Hepler. In the article, the author has revealed the involvement of employees of border detachments, district, regional and republican apparatuses of the DPU–NKVD in smuggling and illegal financial transactions as well as their influence on the formation of a corrupt system. This system affected the career growth of A. Hepler
