"An absolutely honest Bolshevik…": Survival Strategies during the Investigation of 1938–1939 (Based on the Criminal Case of UNKVD Officer E. Shperling in the Chernihiv Region)

Summary/Abstract: Drawing on archival criminal records and the personal file of Emmanuil Anatoliyovych Shperling, Deputy Head of the 3rd Department of the UNKVD in the Chernihiv Region, this study investigates the attempts to accuse the defendant of involvement in a counterrevolutionary Trotskyist organization and collaboration with Polish intelligence. It aims to examine the strategies employed by the accused to avoid punishment and to analyze investigative errors that ultimately led to the closure of the criminal case.
