Summary/Abstract: The purpose of the article is to investigate the main causes, mechanism and consequences of the burning of settlements in the Chernihiv region on the basis of documents of the Extraordinary State Commission for the Identification and Investigation of Crimes of the Nazi Invaders and Their Accomplices, Party-Soviet bodies, archival and criminal files on collaborators from the funds of State Archive Branch of the Security Services of Ukraine, and memoirs of the surviving residents of the burned settlements kept in local history museums and archives of the Chernihiv region. The author attempted to reconstruct the events, to examine the behaviour of the victims and perpetrators of punitive actions, and the survival practices of the local population.
