Summary/Abstract: This study examines contemporary Russian expansionist narratives throughmedia discourse, briefly comparing them with the Japanese approach to highlightcontrasts in the use of soft and hard power. Russia uses the ideology of the “Russian world” to justify its geopolitical ambitions, combining cultural diplomacy withmilitary strategies to expand its influence. Unlike Japan, which focuses on soft power– the export of culture and economic activity, Russia pays much more attention to hardpower, which is particularly visible in its regional and military policy. The analysishighlights Russia’s unique combination of cultural, economic and military tactics inconsolidating its global position, reflecting a complex strategy of national identity andinternational relations.
