Summary/Abstract: The purpose of the article is an attempt to study the features of the information and propaganda work of the Soviet special services in the last years of the existence of the USSR; determine how the state security agencies tried to influence the formation of their image and how the KGB counteracted reputational losses in 1990–1991; outline the main steps taken by the leadership of the Union and Republican secret departments to form the public’s «correct» idea of the role and place of the KGB in Soviet society.
