Separation and divorce: dimensions of the phenomenon and analysis of the main constructs of the literature on the subject

Summary/Abstract: This work intends to review the principal theoretic contributions, as well as Italian and international literature on the subject of marital separation and the reorganization of family relationships following the dissolution of matrimonial ties. After having mapped out a preliminary view on the spread of this phenomenon throughout Italy, psychological and relational dynamics are described which characterize the process of separation, beginning from their «historic premises» to inside the rapport of the couple, and then analyze how the ex-partners may experience the crisis of the relationship’s end, both in the immediate and long term. Elaborate theoretical principal models are examined in order to describe the various phases in which the process of working out the separation and the possible forms of influence of dynamics related to the couple on parenthood, delineating the diverse configurations which parenthood may assume after separation, in the end, touching on the events of such a critical event on the psyche of the children with particular reference to age variables and to risk and protection factors.
