Summary/Abstract: The history of keyboard music begins with the application of the keyboard mechanism to a system of sounding pipes or strings. The earliest undisputed reference to a keyboard instrument – a water (hydraulic) organ – dates back to the third century BC. It comes from Ctesibius of Alexandria, who is considered its inventor. However, there is evidence in the literature of the existence of an instrument with keys as early as ancient Greece – in the Homeric poems and the odes of Pindar, as well as evidence of the use of a hydraulic organ at the Olympic Games in the 1st century BC. The instrument accompanied circus games in the ancient Roman arenas, and according to M. T. Cicero (1st century BC) and everyday life in the homes of wealthy Roman patricians.
