Summary/Abstract: This article examines development assistance provided by Poland and Germany in the years 2004–2022, placed within the broader framework of European Union (EU) development policy. Development disparities between nations remain a key issue, shaped by multifaceted globalization processes that affect both social and economic transformations in developing countries. The aim of this study is to compare and assess the contributions of Poland and Germany to development assistance after the largest EU enlargement in 2004. The analysis uses a descriptive approach, integrating a literature review with statistical data on official development assistance (ODA) to identify patterns and changes in aid distribution and priorities. It highlights the motivations behind donor country contributions that go beyond altruism to include economic, political, and social interests. The article examines the evolution of development aid policy in Poland and Germany, noting significant increases in aid volumes, particularly in response to global crises such as the conflict in Ukraine in 2022.The main findings reveal that while Germany has consistently exceeded the international target of spending 0.7% of its gross national income (GNI) on ODA since 2015, Poland has shown significant growth in its aid contributions, albeit from a lower baseline. The study underlines the importance of a coordinated EU approach to increase the effectiveness of development aid and recommends further alignment of national strategies with the global SDGs. Both countries also use different sectoral structures of development aid. The first hypothesis presented in the text is verified negatively, while the second one is verified positively. The comparative analysis conducted fills a research gap on EU development aid since 2004 and provides insights into the strategic interests driving Polish and German foreign aid, contributing to the discourse on improving aid effectiveness in promoting global development.
