The experience of prayer at St. Sofronie Saharov

Summary/Abstract: The study analyzes the importance of prayer in the spiritual life in the vision of St. Sophrony Sakharov, a disciple of St. Silouan the Athonite. St. Sophrony systematized St. Silouan’s teachings on pure prayer and its conditions and later developed these teachings in his writings. The research emphasizes the different stages of prayer and the necessity of humility, love and purification (through repentance) in order to reach the knowledge of God and the obtaining His grace. Finally, it is emphasized that pure prayer leads to the vision of God’s uncreated light and the experience of eternity.
