Summary/Abstract: The Romanian Orthodox Church is an autocephalous Orthodox Church, whose canonical organization is based inter alia on the apostolic (episcopal) and synodal principles. At central level, the unique episcopal structure, with a synodal character, is the Romanian Patriarchate, headed by the Holy Synod (and the Permanent Synod) and the Patriarch. At the two local levels are the metropolitanates, as intermediate structures, with a synodal character, headed by the metropolitan synod and the metropolitan bishop, and the archdioceses and dioceses, as basic structures, with a mono-episcopal character, headed by the titular bishop (archbishop or diocesan bishop).
