Summary/Abstract: The short story Ragazza che precipita (1960) by the Italian writer Dino Buzzati (1906-1972) is mostly considered as an allegorical-symbolic text. The fall of the protagonist Marta from the skyscraper is an allegory of life that is consumed quickly by pursuing chimeras and then realizing that it is already the end. However, it is possible to trace the story back to the genre of fantastic literature according to Todorov’s definition. This paper aims to explore the dream hypothesis as a rational explanation for the story. Marta’s experience would therefore be the story of a dream in which it is possible to find all the aesthetic and semantic elements of the oneiric vision: the characteristics of the dream atmosphere, the theme of falling into the void as a dream leitmotif, the possible psychoanalytic interpretation of some elements of the text using the processes of dream work identified by Freud.
