GEOMETRIES OF ALIENATION: THE FIGHT BETWEEN POWER AND ILLNESS IN THREE TALES BY DINO BUZZATI

Summary/Abstract: Diseases – especially mutilating ones and those carrying an epidemic threat - have always come with a factor of social discrimination. The sick are literally victims of ostracism, which implements mechanisms of exclusion with dramatic consequences on their lives. Such mechanisms are directly linked to the attitude Authorities not only in the field medicine, but also in the social and political ones. In many of his short stories, the Italian writer Dino Buzzati (1906-1972) has shown interest in the theme of illness as a physical and psychological decadence and the resulting alienation. In three of these short stories, he illustrates this idea perfectly: "Scandalo a corte", "Una cosa che comincia per elle" and "Sette piani". Set in three different contexts, all are built around the leitmotiv of the disease of the body. It would therefore be interesting to analyze these three different ordeals experienced by patients and resulting in banishment imposed by society and institutions. Starting from the dysfunctional body of the patient as the first nucleus of isolation, the work will then focus on the position that is imparted to the patient by the Authorities, but also on the mechanisms of exclusion, and the spaces of alienation.
