Summary/Abstract: In the spring of 1945, Košice, a city in eastern Slovakia, briefly became the provisional capital of liberated Czechoslovakia, witnessing a transformative government program that reshaped the post-war societal structure. However, from October 1944 until its liberation in January 1945, Košice endured a reign of terror under the Hungarian and Slovak Nazis of the Arrow Cross Party. Innocent civilians were brutally murdered, hanged on street lamps, tortured, and executed without trial. Despite the end of the war, many perpetrators of these atrocities evaded justice, with only a few facing punishment years later. The document delves into the harrowing experiences of the city's residents, the political upheaval, and the struggle for justice in the aftermath of the war, highlighting the enduring impact of wartime trauma and the complexities of post-war retribution.
