Summary/Abstract: As a basic component of social relations and one of the key healing factors of psychotherapy, altruism has attracted close attention within different fields of psychology, such as diverse personality theories, schools of psychoterapy, social and developmental psychology, etc. With regard to such a wide range, it is not surprising that there is so much disagreement over defining this concept. The most important ones deals with the question of individual participation of emotional resonance and cognitive processes, possibility to empathise with unconscious experiences, connection to positive feelings and pro-social and altruistic behaviour and so on. We have attempted to reach a clearer understanding of empathy by reconsidering the most important contributions. In accordance with the presented arguments, we have offered a definittion for this important, but often misunderstood concept.
