Summary/Abstract: Traffic is one of the main causes of environmental pollution in urban areas, especially larger cities such as Sarajevo. The strategy for reducing the emission of harmful gases in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina relies exclusively on reducing the age of vehicles in traffic. However, it is possible to undertake additional activities in order to improve the existing situation. In this paper, we propose an algorithm for energy saving in wireless sensor networks used for data transmission in smart parking systems. The search for a parking space represents a significant part of the time that drivers spend when moving their vehicle through the city center. Smart parking lots make an immeasurable contribution to mitigating the negative effects of this activity on the emission of harmful gases. Optimizing the energy consumption of WSN elements as the backbone of the system is one of the most important tasks when implementing the system. We will show in the paper that the proposed algorithm makes a significant contribution to that
