Summary/Abstract: The contribution examines the crucial turning points in the history of the present-day western border between 1420, marking the end of the secular rule of the Patriarch of Aquileia, and 1866 when the boundary in question became the interstate border between the Kingdom of Italy and Austria. The focus is on the section between the Goriška Brda hills and the Predel pass, which can be defined as one of the oldest Slovenian borders still in existence based on the presented reconstruction. The archival materials relevant to the exploration of the western border during different periods and the archives in which they are located are also presented.
