Summary/Abstract: The twentieth century marked a notable shift in the lives of the Hungarians of Bačka. In 1y20, the southern portion of the former county, which was home to numerous ethnic groups, was incorporated into the newly formed South Slavic state. The settling power promptly initiated a transformation in the demographic structure. To expeditiously alter the ethnic composition of the country, settler villages were established in the border regions. However, this situation merely further impeded the functioning of the linguoeconomic network. This paper outlines the traces and examples of this situation in the spoken language. Specifically, this refers to instances of first language contact. It is a meeting between two individuals who are unilingual and lack a common mediator language. Additionally, instances can be observed where the speaker demonstrates a functional understanding of a language, albeit with a disregard for grammatical correctness. An additional fascinating aspect of language use is the incorporation of foreign languages into colloquialisms and proverbs. The given examples of macaronic language illustrate functional relationships that do not adhere to grammatical correctness. Historical evidence from the past century indicates that in municipalities with a majority population of over 70%, the language of the local majority remains dominant, and its language use practices have remained largely unchanged.
