The Primate Admonishes the Prelate. Relations of Archbishop/Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński with Rev. Kazimierz Lagosz in the Light of Their Correspondence from the Secretariat of the Primate of Poland

Summary/Abstract: Cardinal Stefan Wyszynski’s relations with the bishops or administrators of individual Polish dioceses require in-depth research. This article is intended to shed light on the relationship between the Primate of Poland and Rev. Kazimierz Lagosz, the government-imposed Chapter Vicar of the Apostolic Administration of Lower Silesia. The analysis covers the years 1951–1961 (from the assumption of office by Rev. K. Lagosz until his death). The aforementioned topic has not been sufficiently addressed in the literature to date. The article is based on an analysis of the correspondence between the protagonists of this text; supplemented by documentation from the Polish Episcopate and the Pro memoria records of Cardinal S. Wyszyński. The text points out Rev. Lagosz’s abuse of authority and his ill-considered personnel decisions, which resulted in regular admonishments from the Primate of Poland. Also discussed was a memorandum on the establishment of a bishop in Wrocław Archdiocese, the sending of which by the interim ruler of the Apostolic Administration of Lower Silesia was the height of tension in the relations between Cardinal Wyszyński and Rev. Lagosz. The article was supplemented by a source appendix containing the most important correspondence between the two priests (preserved in the Secretariat of the Primate of Poland).
