Attitudes of the Clergy of the Roman Catholic Church in the Socio-Political Reality of the Polish People’s Republic in the Light of Reports of the Religious Apparatus from 1982–1985

Summary/Abstract: The following paper presents the attitudes of theRoman Catholic clergy in the first half of the1980s from the perspective of analyses drawn upby the Office for Religious Affairs (UdsW), whichwas responsible for conducting the official policyof the Polish People’s Republic authorities towardschurches and religious associations. It analyzes re-ports from inspections carried out by the Office’sheadquarters in the Departments for ReligiousAffairs (WdsW) and reports on the activities ofindividual WdsWs from the years 1982–1985. Itanalyzes how the religious apparatus assessed theclergy, lists the most frequent sets of attitudes andindicates what methods the UdsW used to coun-teract the opposition activities of priests and howattitudes favorable to the communist authoritieswere initiated.
