Summary/Abstract: On July 5, 1939, a unit of the „Ragged Guard” a Hungarian right-wing organizationwith an anti-German orientation, crossed into the territory of the Second PolishRepublic to participate in the Polish-German conflict over Gdańsk. Hungarian alliesof the „Polish cause” planned to involve a larger group of volunteers by organizingtransport for individuals from the Polish-Hungarian border deeper into Polish ter-ritory. Although the operation, led by Kálmán Zsabka, was not carried out and theunit was forcibly repatriated two weeks later, the entire affair caused a scandal onthe Hungarian political scene. On August 1, 1939, two members of the pro-Ger-man Arrow Cross Party publicly compromised the participants of this action in theHungarian National Assembly, simultaneously embarrassing the Hungarian govern-ment led by Pál Teleki. This article attempts the first reconstruction of the back-ground, history, and course of the incident based on Hungarian literature on thesubject, archival sources, and press reports
