Summary/Abstract: The archival profession of Bosnia and Herzegovina reflects the political, economic and other relations and frictions that exist in the transitional Bosnian society. Hence it is fraught with many problems. However, in the present circumstances this activity is primarily due to the enthusiasm of the profession to quite successfully cope with different types of disabilities. Respectable results were achieved in many areas of activity, among other things in protecting and retrieving archival material, in its archival processing, the availability of archival material for use on the publishing and cultural and educational activities, etc. However, despite all this archival profession in Bosnia and Herzegovina is not at the level required by the archival science and hence even the whole society. Therefore, it is necessary to take action concretely and activities that the situation quickly and radically changes and improves. In this regard it is particularly necessary in a democratic procedure to identify priorities and issues in the business, which manifest in synergy of factors: first and foremost of all the archives and archival associations, but also the community, to be gradually implemented, understandably not by some separate activities for each priority issue but to create natural and gradual progress - step by step. Priorities and the manner of their implementation should be designed in the long-term development strategy of archival activities in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Such an approach is also a way to effectively neutralize and eliminate the various obstacles that are on the road more efficient development of archival activity, as it is the presence of its politicization and etatization, inadequate autonomy and professionalism, conservative views of all kinds, and especially the absence of appropriate democratic relations that lead to its modernization with all that it entails. Second Congress of archivists of Bosnia and Herzegovina needs to focus on positive change, to give encouragement, especially in the formation of working bodies that should seriously work on issues we are facing.
