Summary/Abstract: Paul Nizon is no doubt a relevant author who rises above his time; he is a man of his time who represents the untimely currents of his time. Elias Canetti und Max Frisch both appreciated Nizon, whose work shows the influence of Robert Walser, Gottfried Benn and Robert Musil. Nizon presents himself in ever changing ways, showing a literary preoccupation with himself that is characterised by a focus on the quest for the self. However, he is always careful not to become trapped in any form of self-encirclement, even though his multifaceted literary interpretations and expressivity might suggest this. Nizon’s writing is a constant effort to explore the self, which is in a continuous process of shaping and reshaping, creating and discarding, always inventing itself anew without ever denying itself.
