Summary/Abstract: The present paper focuses on the evolution of German Studies at the West University of Timișoara since 1990. After the emigration of competent specialists and the restructuring caused by the political upheaval, gaps had to be closed, and new perspectives opened up. It was time to enlist new specialists and make changes to the curriculum. The German department recognized these challenges and faced them with confidence. One of the tasks was to create a balance between traditional German Studies and Studies of German as a foreign language.
