Summary/Abstract: The aim of policies to achieve work-life balance is for women and men to have equal obligations and responsibilities in terms of parental care. The aim is to question and ultimately eliminate dominant gender stereotypes by equally sharing the responsibilities of parental care between women and men. The majority of the European Union (EU) member states standardized in their legislation some form regarding the possibility for using paternity and/or parental leave. However, the form varies considerably from one state to another in terms of length, financial compensation, and whether the leave applies to an individual parent or the family as a whole. This paper presents the result of the research conducted within the COST action CA21150, “Parental Leave Policies and Social Sustainability (Sustainability@Leave)”.The research presented in this paper focused on the analysis of the legislation on paternity/parental leave, as specified by the Directive (EU) 2019/1158 of the European Parliament and of the Council on work-life balance for parents and carers adoptedon June 20, 2019. The analysis included the minimum rights prescribed by the said Directive. In addition to the analysis of the solutions contained in the Directive (EU) 2019/1158,the paper analyzed the legal solutions regarding the use of paternity/parental leave in the Republic of Croatia, as an EU member state, and Bosnia and Herzegovina, as a non-EU member state.
