Summary/Abstract: The electricity system of Bosnia and Herzegovina, built during the period of the former SFRY, today plays a key transit role in Southeast Europe, although it was not originally designed for such a function. Insufficient development of interconnections with neighboring countries reduces the system's flexibility and stability, increasing the risk of electricity supply interruptions. This paper analyzes opportunities to increase the stability of the BiH power system through proposed infrastructure projects, including the connection of the 400 kV Banja Luka hub with the 400 kV Žerjavinec or the Tumbri hub, as well as the implementation of the Trans-Balkan and Central Balkan corridors. The results indicate that such solutions would diversify energy flows, reduce pressure on critical lines, and enhance the system's resilience to cross-border disruptions. The paper also examines the role of these interconnections in the context of a regional power system collapse, highlighting that their implementation would significantly improve the chances of the BiH power system remaining operational during crises. The recommendations from this paper provide a strategic foundation for decision-making regarding future investments in the electricity sector of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
