The Implicit Nature of Apology Formulas in the Speech Behaviour of Belarusians

Summary/Abstract: The article presents the position concerning thecommunicative-activity approach to the studyof etiquette formulas of apology in teachingBelarusian as a foreign language, which isbased on the communicative-pragmatic aspectin modern linguistic research. To this aim, ananalysis of linguistic, scientifi c, methodologicaland educational works on the subject was carriedout. In addition, the results of previous researchinto the most frequently used expressionsin dialogic discourse with the componentsпрабач(це), выбачай(це) and даруй(це) arebriefl y outlined. The article provides a varietyof illustrations taken from the National Corpusof the Belarusian language, which became the basis of the research, confi rming the proposedposition. Due to the conclusions made, itbecame possible to draw students’ attentionto the peculiarities in the speech behaviourof the Belarusians, manifested at the level ofstandard communication situations. By usingin their speech the apology formulas in indirect(implicit) meaning and as situational frames,the Belarusians demonstrate certain featuresof their mentality and national character. At theend of the article a sample set of communicativeand speech tasks for the exercises is suggestedwhich is likely to contribute to more effectivedevelopment and formation of communicativeand cultural-linguistic competences of foreignstudents.
