Summary/Abstract: The first comparative history of Ukrainian music by Borys Hrinchenko appeared only in 1922, as one of the results of the several years of existence of the independent Ukrainian state. Given the national liberation struggle of the long nineteenth century, the intensive formation of Ukrainian cultural identity, and the introduction of European Romanticism in one of its Eastern European versions, Ukrainian music of that time is marked by three deep divisions: the radical difference between the beginning and the end of the nineteenth century; the situation on the Ukrainian territories of the Russian and Austrian empires; and the activities of the state cultural institutions of both empires and the institutions of Ukrainian artistic self-organization. These three divisions continue to define the current agenda in contemporary discussions of the Ukrainian cultural situation and require special attention from those who undertake to write a global history of Ukrainian music.
