Summary/Abstract: The first production of Handel’s opera on the Ukrainian stage became a milestone in the country’s artistic history. The Kyiv version of Acis and Galatea combines historically informed performance with a bold directorial interpretation of the classic story. For the current cultural policy of Ukraine, which aims at active decolonisation, turning to European early opera means not only renewing the repertoire, but also the possibility of involving innovative theatre directors in opera productions and rethinking Ukraine’s own Baroque tradition through the works of other national cultures.
