THE ANALYSIS OF AN ELECTION (CORNELIU ZELEA- CODREANU, 31 AUGUST 1931, NEAMT COUNTY)

Summary/Abstract: This present study proposes to evidence a few of the causes that favoured the success of the legionary movement in the partial elections from Neamt county, from 31 August 1931. This event is considered to be as one as the most important moment of the Romanian extreme right’s evolution in the specialty historiography. The fact that this first elective victory realized under conditions in which only few months before the organization ruled by Corneliu Zelea Codreanu had been abolished and forbidden by the Romanian authorities, generated some different points of view among the historians. Althought at a thourough analysis we may sustain that the victory of Corneliu Zelea Codreanu in the partial elections from Neamt county, from 31 August 1931 did not happen by chance. His success was generated by several factors, beginning with the attitude of the authorities which offered this way an unimaginable freedom of expression to the electors from the county, till the way which the guard approached this electoral campaign, through a new type of electoral propaganda. The economic, social and ethno-cultural characteristics of the county emphasised by the official statistics from the beginning of the 30s from the past century are important for understanding these events. Although, we cannot omit the province’s characteristics from which the county was part of, province in which there was signed the constitution act of the Legionary Movement. In Moldavia, where the most legionary nests existed, the movement always enjoyed great sympathy, especially in the countryside, among priests and schoolmasters, who leading the rural hierarchy, permitted the legionaries to win lots of votes in these localities.
