Evaluating the Acquisition of Specialized Languages

Summary/Abstract: With a view to showcasing some of the various contexts for SP assessment, this paper offers a brief review of its theoretical framework and the features which need to be considered when designing different forms of assessment. Since ESP courses focus on clearly defined objectives derived from needs analysis, their targeted goals are narrower and more specific than general English ones, making them more attainable through a series of activities which involve higher-order skills and field-specific vocabulary. Thus, the theoretical foundation of SP assessment should be broadened to encompass not only linguistic elements but also contextual factors relevant to test takers and score users.
