Summary/Abstract: This paper outlines Dostoevsky’s thoughts concerning the relationship between Christian faith and atheism, based on his diary. The aim of our work was to present that Dostoevsky approached this, for him, the most important issue, not as an artist, but rather as a publicist. This complex quarrel, especially prominent in Dostoevsky’s mature work, remains unresolved, it remains an open question in his most acclaimed novels. In them, through different characters, both his Christian faith and his atheism are expressed and convincingly defended to the same extent. The literary and artistic work of this distinguished writer is contradictory, ingenious and enigmatic. Unlike Dostoyevsky’s novels, The Writer’s Diary gives us his clear answers to questions arising from the interaction of Christianity and atheism. Within The Writer’s Diary, Dostoevsky firmly presents what he believed in, or at least wanted to believe in, he clearly presents values for which he tirelessly argued, emphasizing them as a legacy to future generations.
