Summary/Abstract: The first missionary diocese of the Romanian Orthodox Church opened effectively in 1935, thanks to the persistent efforts of Patriarch Miron Cristea. He was directly involved in the preparatory studies, in the dialogue with the state authorities, in the drafting of the Law establishing the diocese, in the election and ordination of the first missionary bishop, in the correspondence with the Romanian Legation in Washington and then in the good management of the complex life of the diocese in America. All these qualify Miron Cristea as the de facto founder of the first official representation of B.O.R. (Romanian Orthodox Church) abroad. Through its international connotations, his success reverberates in the history of Romanian-American relations as a genuine act of Orthodox diplomacy.
