Summary/Abstract: This scientific paper was prepared on the basis of data found as a result of researching the collections of the National Museum of History of Moldova, and is part of the institutional project “Outstanding Personalities as a Part of the National Cultural and Historical Heritage (19th-20th centuries)”. The purpose of the study is to identify, to study and to promote materials stored in the collections of the National Museum of History of Moldova, which are related to outstanding people. Among them are the mayor K. Schmidt (1846-1928) and the architect A. Bernardazzi (1831-1907); when developing museum possessions, special attention should be paid to photodocumentary collections and memorial items related to these two prominent figures who stood at the origins of the transformation of Chisinau “from a big village” into a provincial administrative center. Heritage items supplementing information about the life and work of Karl Schmidt, the mayor of Chisinau in the period from 1877 to 1903, replenished the funds of the museum in the early 1990s. Although the collection is numerically small (about ten storage units), the documentary and historical value of the original exhibits that make it up is undeniable. A. Bernardazzi, architect of the city of Chisinau in the period from 1856 to 1878, is one of the few outstanding people whose heritage is presented in the National Museum of History of Moldova in an enviable volume. The collection was transferred here in 1991 from the Museum of Local Lore, where it came to the end of the 1980s as a result of the acquisition from P.G. Babadzhan, a resident of Odessa. This collection is of great importance both in terms of cultural and historical value and in quantitative terms (about fifty authentic items) and refers to the life and work of the architect in Chisinau, Odessa and Kherson in the period from 1868 to 1910. The putting these cultural values from the collections of the National Museum of History of Moldova into the scientific use will certainly contribute to the better understanding of the contribution these people to the prosperity of the city of Chisinau during the Tsarist times. The scientific communication is also intended to pay tribute to these two great figures of the history of urban planning in Bessarabia to commemorate the 190th anniversary of the birth of the architect Alexander Bernardazzi and the 175th anniversary of the birth of “the most famous mayor of Chisinau” Karl Schmidt.
