Summary/Abstract: This article concerns the motivation of adult students to learn a foreign language. The aim was to understand how these impulses connect with the goals declared by the group of listeners. The answer to this question was possible thanks to the analysis of questions previously asked to students learning Italian in the non-formal system. The study shows that the largest part of the surveyed group decided to learn “for pleasure”, with the intention of becoming fluent in the language. The juxtaposition of such a dominant motivation with an ambitious goal, as well as other issues such as the adult age of students, non-formal context, and metropolitan environment, allow us to qualify the discussed case as an exemplification of lifelong education.
