Summary/Abstract: The present paper deals with the issue of how poetry is read by pupils in primary education. This proves to be challenging, especially in view of a number of reception obstacles, which point, in particular, to pupils’ underdeveloped imagery and inability to navigate through poetic devices. In the empirical part of the paper, research was conducted using focus groups, reading, and subsequent interpretation of poetry by Year 4 pupils. The data obtained from the research confirms the pupils’ limited receptive skills and also points tothe necessity of their continuous improvement.
