Summary/Abstract: John Fowles has shown himself adventurous enough to experiment with a great diversity of styles and subject-matter, and confident enough to publish in a wide variety of genres, including different novel forms, short stories, poems, film scripts, a book of personal philosophy, translation from French, literary criticism, and a range of other nonfiction and occasional pieces. All of these have been accomplished in a publishing career of about two decade. Fowles’s interests are wide-ranging, and his erudition considerable. His great gift for narrative, however, is undeniable, as is the intellectual appeal of his fiction, which often “titillates” and educates simultaneously. He has earned international prominence not only as innovator, but also as the author of works of fiction that have ranked high on best-seller lists both in the United states and England. Four of his works of fiction have been made into films. Today, he is one of the few writers who command the attention of both a mass audience and the literary scholar and critic. John Fowles’s fame among Romanian readers increased in the ‘90s. His work (fiction and non-fiction), benefited from very good translations into Romanian and the author's literary work is studied even in high schools.
