Summary/Abstract: This study recalls some contemporary approaches and the essence of culture – its understand-ing in order to read correctly the thought contained in John Paul II’s teaching regarding its under-standing, meaning and role. For this purpose, some opinions about it and historical references arepresented. Attempts were made to present the thought of John Paul II in relation to these refer-ences, and especially to the teaching of the Second Vatican Council and the magisterium of theChurch. In this context, considerations were made on the evangelizing and educational missionconducted by the Church. This education in its origins is related to the culture of Ancient Greeceand the Judeo-Christian tradition. Attention was paid to the educational power of the Greekpaideia and then the specificity of John Paul II’s thought relating to the role and tasks of culturewas presented.
