Summary/Abstract: On october 31, 2024, 50 years will have passed since the first flight of the IAR-93 Vultur aircraft, also known as the J-22 ORAO, an aircraft that was the result of a unique collaboration between two eastern bloc countries, Iugoslavia and Romania, designed for ground attack and reconnaissance. The cooperation program represented a major technological and industrial challenge for both states. The impact and extent of this military-industrial program for Romania is proportionally equivalent to the space race for the Moon. The end of the Cold War found the romanian side of the program in a phase with technical and consequently operational difficulties that were absolutely normal and hard to manage by the interested parties. The potential for modernization and its impact on the industry and military environment are discussed in the context of present-day military conflicts and the role the IAR-93 aircraft could have continued to play.
