Summary/Abstract: The aim of the article is to present the mechanisms of action of obsessive--compulsive disorder in the context of the sacrament of penance and reconciliation and indications regarding the desired course of this sacrament in the case of people with this disease. The faithful of the Catholic Church, like other social groups, are at risk of obsessive-compulsive disorder, and confession itself may, in addition to spiritual effects, also bring psychological benefi ts. The article analyzes the basic features of obsessive-compulsive disorder and the individual stages of confession and presents the appropriate approach of the confessor to the penitent. The text also emphasizes the need for substantive and practical preparation of confessors. Thanks to this, the confession of people with the disorder in question can be a spiritual healing and an encounter with God rich in mercy, not another experience of fear.
