Summary/Abstract: The authors present a coin hoard consisting of 81 Roman Republican denarii, which was recently discovered on the upper course of the Bâsca Chiojdului River, in the commune of Chiojdu, Buzău County, on a partially wooded dominant hill. The place of discovery is located in the neighborhood of the Geto-Dacian sites from Valea Lupului and Valea Cătinei. It is the biggest hoard of republican denarii till now discovered on the territory of Buzău County. Almost all the coins bear the traces of a fire, which affected them unevenly. It would not be out of the question that the coins were recovered from the remains of a burnt structure and buried in a more secure place near the road along the river course. On the other hand, the denarii have an advanced degree of wear and some incised control-marks, an indication of intense circulation. In 19 cases the issues are represented by several copies (up to four for the magistrates L. Flaminius Chilo (109-108 BC) and C. Naevius Balbus (79 BC). They fall chronologically between 189-180 and 42 BC, the latest coin being the denarius of P. Clodius from the time of the Second Triumvirate. The core of the hoard consists of two compact groups totaling 40 denarii, each in almost uninterrupted chronological succession, attesting to the intervals 110-101 and 90-75 BC. Even if the latest coin dates from the year 42, the wear of the pieces in the hoard indicates that the lot of denarii from Chiojdu would have been brought to the area significantly later, possibly towards the end of the 1st century BC. – maybe even the first decade of our era. The hoard from Chiojdu seems to be contemporary with those from Pârscov and Cândești, all three possibly representing batches that arrived contemporaneously in the Carpathians of Curvature area, in a pre-constructed form.
