Summary/Abstract: The article reviews the creation, development and territorial distribution of viticulture and winemaking in the lands of today's France until the end of the 16th century. Historical analysis supports the changing geography of these economic activities and the leading role in defining geographic regions in view of their importance in specific historical stages.
