Summary/Abstract: In the 70’s and 80’s of the last century a new direction in the development of Bulgarian theatre began to take shape, namely the rejection of the classical stage space. In most European countries, including the Eastern Bloc and the United States, these processes began as early as the late 1950s and early 1960s and are mostly associated with the complete destruction of the Italian stage through the return to the antique stage–arena and especially through the attempts of Living Theatre, Jerzy Grotowski in the 1960s, his student Eugenio Barba, Ariane Mnouchkine and of course Tadeusz Kantor, in whose practice, according to the French researcher Denis Bablet, the audience invaded the stage. The role of the scenographer in the overall creative process changes: from being the creator of the space, he now has the task of finding a new point of view for the spectators. In this process, the roles of director and set designer often merge, complement, or completely blur. In the Bulgarian theatre, such an invasion of the audience on stage became possible only at the end of the communist period.
